Window Intercom Systems
A window intercom system gives staff and customers clear two-way communication through glass, plexiglass, and security barriers. Choose a surface mount or window mount system for banks, pharmacies, ticket booths, and government offices across Texas.
What Is a Window Intercom System?
A window intercom system is a two-way audio solution that lets staff and customers communicate clearly through glass partitions, security windows, or protective barriers, without raising their voices, cracking open a window, or passing paper back and forth. A microphone and speaker on each side carry sound electronically, so conversations stay natural even with a solid pane of glass in between.
These systems are common wherever a physical barrier separates staff from the public: bank teller windows, pharmacy counters, ticket booths, transit stations, courthouses, correctional facilities, and drive-up lanes. An open duplex amplifier lets both people talk and listen at the same time, and the sealed window still provides the security, hygiene, and noise control it was installed for.
Why a Window Intercom System?
- Preserve security barriers, with no need to open windows or slide trays to be heard
- Reduce background noise and echo common in lobbies and terminals
- Support ADA and accessibility compliance for public-facing service points
- Improve hygiene by keeping a sealed barrier between staff and the public
- Available as surface mount and window mount systems, including ballistic rated and weatherproof outdoor options
How It Works
A speaker and microphone unit is placed on each side of the window. Voice is picked up on one side, amplified, and reproduced clearly on the other. On the customer side, the unit either sits on or attaches to the counter or glass (surface mount) or is installed into an opening in the window itself (window mount). The staff side uses a counter unit with a directional microphone and a mute switch.
The result: clear, direct sound without background noise or reverberation.
Surface Mount and Window Mount Systems
Both system types use the same open duplex amplifier and staff unit. The choice comes down to how your window is built and how much protection it needs.
Surface Mount Systems
Speaker and microphone units that are free-standing or fixed to the counter or glass, so no opening is needed in the window. They are quick to install on existing counters and come in configurations for quiet, busy, and outdoor locations, including a weatherproof entry system for gates and drive-up service.
Best for: existing windows and counters that are not being modified, and fast upgrades to service points.
Window Mount Systems
An all-in-one customer speaker and microphone unit installed into an opening in the glass or security screen. This suits new windows prepared for an intercom, retrofits where an older system left an opening, and replacing a passive speak-through. Ballistic rated versions are available for high-security environments.
Best for: windows that already have an opening, and secure facilities that need protected communication.
Where Window Intercom Systems Excel
Banks & Credit Unions
Teller windows and drive-up lanes stay secure while customers and staff communicate without shouting through glass.
Pharmacies & Healthcare
Sealed dispensing windows protect staff and patients while keeping conversations about care and prescriptions clear and private.
Transit & Ticketing
Station booths and toll windows cut through ambient noise so riders can hear directions the first time.
Government & Courthouses
Clerk windows and security checkpoints maintain protective barriers without sacrificing clear communication.
Why Venues Choose Window Intercom Systems
Window Intercom Systems create a better experience for both staff and the public. Customers no longer have to lean in, repeat themselves, or step around a barrier to be understood. Staff no longer need to open windows for every interaction, which helps maintain security, climate control, and infection control standards, all while keeping service fast and frustration-free.
For venues serving the public at a protected counter, a reliable intercom is often the difference between a smooth transaction and a line of frustrated customers straining to hear.
Planning a Window Intercom System Installation
Every venue is unique, and a successful installation begins with a detailed assessment of the space. Glass thickness and type, whether the window already has an opening, ambient noise levels, counter layout, and the level of protection required all factor into whether a surface mount or window mount system will perform best. We design a system that fits cleanly with your existing windows and counters.
After installation, we provide testing, calibration, and documentation to ensure the system performs reliably for years to come. Ongoing support is available whenever you need adjustments, upgrades, or additional service windows.
Accessibility & ADA Considerations
Many public-facing service windows fall under ADA communication access requirements. A properly installed and calibrated window intercom helps ensure customers can hear and be heard clearly, regardless of hearing ability, background noise, or the thickness of the security glass.
Pairing a surface mount or window mount system with a hearing loop aerial, under the counter or applied to the glass, can further improve access for patrons who use hearing aids or cochlear implants with a telecoil.
